The New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 7-1 Saturday, pulling the Padres further away from the top wild card playoff spot.
The Mets scored one run in the top of the first inning, thanks to an RBI from first baseman Pete Alonso that hit off third base and bounced into foul territory, allowing the run to score easily.
New York fully broke it open in the fourth inning, as shortstop Francisco Lindor belted a grand slam, putting the Mets up 5-0. New York would later add two more runs via solo home runs, including another homer from Lindor.
The only Padres run was scored on a groundout from designated hitter Luis Arraez.
Mets starting pitcher David Peterson only struck out two Padres hitters, but he kept the San Diego offense in check all night.
The Padres have fallen to one and a half games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks, winners of five in a row, for the top wild card spot. San Diego still has a two game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the wild card standings.
The Mets can win the four game series tomorrow, while the Padres can only hope for a split. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
