The Padres have swept a three-game series against the Pirates, coming back to win Thursday’s final game in Pittsburgh 7-6.
San Diego took a 4-0 lead two innings in, only to fall behind in the seventh inning.
The Pirates entered the top of the ninth inning up 5-4, but the Padres rallied to take the lead after a throwing error from Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz helped score the go-ahead run.
Luis Arraez then hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 7-5. The Arraez double would prove big, as the Pirates scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, but nothing after that.
“… When opportunities present themselves, we take advantage,” manager Mike Shildt told MLB.com.
The Padres are now 2.5 games out of first place in the National League West, right in front of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who can tie the Padres in the standings if they win their late contest against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Padres now travel to Miami to play a three-game set against the Marlins, before returning home to host the Pirates.
