Starting Monday and continuing through Sept. 9, the city of San Diego is hosting a series of public meetings to get input from residents on trash and recycling services prior to enacting Measure B.
The ballot measure, approved by voters in 2022, allows the city to potentially introduce a fee for trash collection for over 285,000 single-family homeowners. The public meetings will help the city determine enhanced services and fee options as Measure B changes roll out next summer.
The public meetings will be held in each City Council district with the first at Logan Heights in District 8. The meetings will serve as a forum where council members can get input from San Diegans who receive trash and recycling collection services from the Environmental Services Department, and residents can learn about potential changes and ask questions.
Charging a fee for waste collection could not only enhance services, but also help protect the environment and allow the city to allocate General Fund money previously spent on trash and recycling collection for only a subset of San Diego residents to other projects and services that could benefit more residents.
The first meeting, on Aug. 5, will be hosted by Jeremy Bauer, assistant director of the Environmental Services Department. This meeting, similar to the subsequent meetings, will be filled with interactive, educational, and collaborative activities designed to answer questions and seek feedback on waste collection services.
“The most important component of this process is listening to what our customers want for services,” said Bauer.
Each meeting will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Attendees will be asked to give feedback on their service preferences and will receive giveaway items for their households, such as kitchen pails for food scrap collection. There will also be a virtual meeting on Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
