No tears – summer’s not over yet! This San Diego weekend, you have your pick of music throughout the county, along with outdoor festival goodness and a chance to roll and bounce near the beach.
Embrace Native American culture at the 52nd annual Barona Powwow in Lakeside. The free event, with drumming and dancing, begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Barona Sports Park and continues at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. See the Grand Entries at 8 p.m. all weekend, with early opportunities at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Like your nostalgia ’70s, ’80s or 90s style? There’s some music throwbacks coming to town:
- Petco Park – Def Leppard, Journey and the Steve Miller Band, whose hits include “Rock of Ages,” “Don’t Stop Believin,’ and “Fly Like an Eagle,” respectively; tickets start at $68 for Friday’s 6:30 p.m. show.
- North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre – Santana and Counting Crows come to Chula Vista for the Oneness Tour Friday, with Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago following on Saturday. Tickets start at $41 for Friday and $49 for Saturday.
- Sycuan Resort Casino – The Jacksons rose to fame with brother Michael, the supernova of the family, but Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon remain to sing the hits, from “I Want You Back” to “Can You Feel It?” Tickets start at $79 for Friday’s 8 p.m. show at the Heritage Event Center.
The Educational Cultural Complex in Mountain View hosts the two-day Jazz at the Creek with bassist Nathan East headlining Saturday and guitarist Jonathan Butler on Sunday. The shows start at 1 p.m. each day on the venue’s South Lawn. Single-day tickets start at $76.
The Vista Vibes Mini Music Festival opens at Local Roots Boochyard, 1430 Vantage Court, Suite 101, at 2 p.m. Saturday, with We The Commas – San Diego Music Award nominees – Tony Exum, Jr. and Joe Dreamz. Frida’s Taqueria, We Cookn Creole Soul Food and Kona Ice provide the eats. Admission starts at $25.
San Diego State opens a new era as college football returns Saturday. The Aztecs hit the field at Snapdragon Stadium at 5 p.m. Saturday with new head coach Sean Lewis. They face Texas A&M Commerce with tickets starting at $27.
The Sandlot, a mainstay of movies-at-the-park programs, has hit the big 3-0. Feel old? The cast marks the anniversary of the tale of boyhood friends who bond over baseball by gathering at the Magnolia in El Cajon at 6 p.m. Saturday. See a screening and take part in a Q&A with stars Tom Guiry (Smalls), Chauncey Leopardi (Squints) and Marty York (Yeah Yeah). Tickets start at $30.
Mavericks Beach Club in Pacific Beach creates the Big Disco Energy Skate Rink on Mavericks’ side parking lot for Labor Day weekend. The roller disco, open from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, includes skate rentals, a pop-up bar, drink specials and more.
