In a decisive move to improve public safety, San Diego Councilmember Stephen Whitburn (District 3) and Council President Sean Elo-Rivera (District 9) have introduced and passed the Safe Streets Resolution, their offices announced Monday.
The resolution designates street safety as the highest transportation priority, reinforcing the city’s commitment to protecting residents on the roads.
“This is about taking a stand — for every pedestrian, every cyclist, every driver and every San Diegan who deserves to live without fear of tragedy on our street,” Whitburn said. “This resolution is more than words. It is a commitment to action.”
The comprehensive policy analysis aims to reduce preventable traffic deaths and injuries across all nine council districts. A key component involves a thorough review of existing municipal codes and council policies by the Office of the Independent Budget Analyst to identify potential improvements.
“Every person in every community deserves to feel safe, whether they are walking, cycling or driving on our city streets,” Elo-Rivera said. “Tragically, far too many people continue to be impacted by traffic violence in our city. The lives lost, the injuries endured, and the fear that San Diegans feel can be prevented — if we take the action our residents demand.”
